Edinburgh's Royal Mile in the time of Mary, Queen of Scots

Engraving of James V's palace

The Royal Mile is one of best known streets in Edinburgh, connecting the Castle with the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

It has been a processional route for kings and queens for hundreds of years, including for Mary, Queen of Scots once she returned to Scotland in 1561.

A walk down the Royal Mile today offers a glimpse at life in Edinburgh when Mary lived at the Palace.

Download this PDF map to help you investigate the city’s most famous street as Mary, Queen of Scots would have seen it.
