Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

Important occasions

Due to the technical limitations of early photography in capturing fast-moving scenes, documentary photographs taken during Queen Victoria and Prince Albert’s shared lifetime are rare in the Royal Collection. However, the negatives shown below are records of aspects of important events involving the royal couple. These include a visit of Napoleon III (1808-73) at Osborne House in 1857, the wedding of the Prince and Princess of Wales in 1863 and the planting of a tree memorialising Prince Albert in 1862.
