The 12th-century ruins of Holyrood Abbey©

Holyrood Abbey has changed significantly since it was first founded in 1128. Today, it is a ruin- but what did the original Abbey look like nearly nine centuries ago? Join us for a day of activities for the whole family exploring the architecture and history of the abbey.

    Design a Stained Glass Window

Today Holyrood Abbey is a ruin- but hundreds of years ago, it would have been a huge building, bright and colourful. Imagine what the abbey would have looked like centuries ago- and design your own stained glass window for your imagined abbey.

    Become a Soap Mason

When building the abbey, people called masons were responsible for creating the amazing architecture, and carving the many details we can still see today. From beautiful patterns to curious faces, there’s so many details to explore in the Abbey. Try your hand at carving some of these details, or design your own- on soap, which is far easier to carve than stone!

    Abbey Family Trail

Take an Abbey activity trail to look for hidden details and stories, try your hand at design and learn about the Abbey’s long history.

    The Origins of the Abbey

Join us for a short talk exploring the history and myth behind the abbey’s foundation and early life. Discover some of the important events this historic building has witnessed and how it became the ruin we see today.

Short talks will take place at 11:00, 12:00 and 14:00
