William Howard Russell joined the tour party as the Prince's Honorary Private Secretary. Before the Prince’s tour of India, Russell had been a war correspondent for The Times covering the Crimean War and the so-called Indian Mutiny or Indian Rebellion of 1857, when Indian soldiers employed in the East India Company armies revolted.
