In this sketch Sir Bartle Frere, General Probyn, Colonel Ellis and Dr Fayrer study a map of India. General Probyn and Colonel Ellis were part of the Prince’s household; Sir Bartle Frere had previously served as Governor General of Bombay and joined the tour party to advise the Prince on Indian court customs. Dr Fayrer had worked in India as a surgeon since 1850, and joined the tour as the Prince’s physician. Fayrer played an important role in determining the dates and route of the tour.
