The Imperial Crown of India

1911

RCIN 31706

The Imperial Crown of India was designed by Garrard, the Crown Jewellers. It has a silver frame, laminated with gold, and is set with 6,100 diamonds. The crown is set with emeralds, sapphires, diamonds and rubies.

King George V wore full coronation robes together with this new crown at his inauguration ceremony in Delhi, despite the intense heat. He later wrote in his diary, 'Rather tired after wearing the Crown for 3 1/2 hours, it hurt my head, as it is pretty heavy...'.  On the return to England, the crown was added to the regalia in the Tower of London.
