Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother's Crown

This crown was made in 1937 for Queen Elizabeth, consort of King George VI, using many stones already in the Collection. Most of the 2,800 diamonds set into its platinum frame were removed from Queen Victoria's Regal Circlet. The front cross meanwhile holds the Koh-i-nûr diamond, which had been mounted in the crowns of Queen Alexandra and Queen Mary. The large diamond at the front of the band was a gift from Sultan Abdul Medjid to Queen Victoria in 1856 - a gesture of gratitude for British support during the Crimean War.

After the 1937 coronation, Queen Elizabeth wore this crown at State Openings of Parliament during her husband's reign, and again at the coronation of her daughter, Queen Elizabeth II, in 1953.
