The New Castle at Balmoral

Jun 1854

RCIN 2906125

In 1852, Prince Albert acquired the lease for the Balmoral estate and original castle. It was soon apparent that the existing property was too small for the large royal family and so construction began on a new residence on the estate. Prince Albert played a key role in the architectural designs of the building and tracked the building's progress with interest. This photograph documents the construction of the castle.
