"Dinner Hour"; Dock workers having lunch

May 1938

RCIN 2601858

Between 1938 and 1949, the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board commissioned the studio Stewart Bale Ltd. to photograph subject matter concerning the construction of the Waterloo River Entrance Lock. The resulting works were presented in an album to Princess Elizabeth, Duchess of Edinburgh, later Queen Elizabeth II (b.1926) and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh (b.1921) to mark their visit to the opening of the lock. The photographs vary in subject matter, containing photographs of dock workers having lunch to aerial views of the Lock. The album is thus a significant record of the Stewart Bale Ltd. photographic studio's work over a ten year period.
