With the invention of light-weight, handheld cameras around the turn of the century, photographers were able to easily photograph human subjects in public, outdoor spaces. This photograph was taken by an unknown, amateur photographer. The two children pose beneath a floral display installed for the Coronation of King George VI in May 1937. The children smile at the photographer and the young boy salutes. In the background, a woman looks on. Whilst posed, the sense of informality marks a significant difference to portraits of the nineteenth and early twentieth century, largely taken in photographic studios.
