From the late seventeenth century onwards French printmakers began to produce popular fashion prints. These portraits showed illustrious men and women dressed in the very latest fashions. Here, Louise Françoise de Bourbon, Princess of Condé (1673–1743) is elegantly dressed wearing the elaborate wired lace fontange (a tall headdress) and holding a fan. These prints help historians of fashion and dress to date historic trends.
