AGOSTINO DEI MUSI (C. 1490-AFTER 1536)

Hayreddin Barbarossa

1535

RCIN 619095

While the majority of portraits depict European sitters, some prints represent rulers from across the globe. This is a rare Italian portrait of the Turkish Admiral, Hayreddin Pasha (1478–1546) who ruled Algiers and served under Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent (r.1520–66). In the west, Hayreddin Pasha was known as Barbarossa, on account of his distinctive red beard and this print illustrated the contemporary western interest in Ottoman subjects.
