How the Royal Family have celebrated Christmas over the centuries

QUEEN VICTORIA, QUEEN OF THE UNITED KINGDOM (1819-1901)

dated 17 Jan 1834

RCIN 980015.fs

Christmas plays and theatre performances were an important part of the royal festive season. Before becoming queen, Princess Victoria often attended the theatre and ballet and later drew and painted her favourite scenes in her sketchbooks. This watercolour depicts a scene from the play St George and the Dragon, which the Princess saw at the Drury Lane Theatre on 26 December 1833.
