    THOMAS GAINSBOROUGH (1727-88)

Wooded landscape with a silver birch

    c. 1746-47

Black and white chalk on buff paper | 42.7 x 34.2 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 931535

This drawing is connected to another landscape painting made by Gainsborough in the 1740s, Autumn Landscape in the Norwich Castle Museum. Made in black and white chalks on buff paper, the study shows Gainsborough experimenting with light and shade. Other drawings in the same technique transform our understanding of Gainsborough’s working methods.
