Napoleon’s body was moved from St Helena to Paris in 1840. When Queen Victoria visited his nephew, Napoleon III, in 1855, she made a trip to view the tomb. She recorded in her Journal: ‘there I stood on the arm of Napoleon IIIrd, before the coffin of his Uncle, our bitterest foe! I, the granddaughter of that King [George III], who hated Napoleon most & who most vigorously opposed him, & this very nephew ... now my nearest & dearest ally!!’
