After Waterloo, the Duke of Wellington pursued a political career, which included a term as Prime Minister (1828–30). He died on 14 September 1852 at the age of 83. His funeral procession, held over two months later, was huge public event, watched by over a million people. He had been a trusted advisor to Queen Victoria, who named her third son after him, and the Queen commissioned this watercolour of his funeral cortege passing his London residence, Apsley House at Hyde Park Corner.
