DENIS DIGHTON (1792-1827)

The First Duke of Wellington.

c.1815

RCIN 916709

The Duke of Wellington was 46 when he commanded the allied armies at Waterloo and already had a distinguished military record. Although he had not previously fought an army led by Napoleon, he had led the British forces in the Peninsular War of 1807–14, which had liberated Spain and Portugal from French rule. As this portrait shows, Wellington did not dress in an officer’s uniform, favouring a frock coat, breeches and cockade hat.
