David Wilkie was born in Cults, Fifeshire. He entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1805, and was elected an Academician in 1811 at the age of only twenty-six. These three studies, purchased by Queen Elizabeth in 1964, are preparatory drawings for an oil painting of Princess (later Queen) Victoria holding a casket in her hands, surrounded by members of her family. It was typical of Wilkie’s working method to produce a number of small sketches of different parts of a composition, in different media, trying out variations of position.
