Victoria and Albert greatly enjoyed this view when they visited the palace of Prince Frederick William’s aunt and uncle in 1858, and the hosts commissioned a depiction of it as a gift for their guests. The striped awning lends an intimate feel to the watercolour, placing the spectator firmly on the terrace looking out at the view.
