CARL HAAG (1820-1915)

John Mackenzie with a dead stag on a pony

dated 1853

Watercolour with touches of bodycolour and scraping out | 35.2 x 50.4 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 920750

This atmospheric study is for a large watercolour showing Prince Albert returning to the castle after a day’s shooting which Victoria commissioned as a present for her husband. The heavily textured paper and Carl Haag’s broad brushstrokes contribute to the tactile depiction of the coats of both the pony and the stag. The fleeting way John Mackenzie meets the viewer’s eye reinforces the naturalistic impression of the scene.
