The Queen and Prince Albert admired the Welsh scenery on their journey to Scotland in 1847. This watercolour was probably mounted as a souvenir in one of their albums. The wide format of the paper and soft, muted colouring used by Thomas Miles Richardson contributes to the romantic nature of his view of the ruined castle.
