FRANK DILLON (1823-1909)

The Britannia tubular bridge over the Menai Straits

dated 1852

Watercolour and bodycolour over pencil | 25.8 x 39.8 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 920228

Dillon’s view of the innovative Britannia Bridge, an important transport link between Anglesey and North Wales, emphasises the structure’s monumentality. Designed by the celebrated engineer Robert Stephenson, who showed the royal party the bridge in October 1852, Victoria thought it ‘stupendous’.
