JOHN MARTIN (1789-1854)

The Eve of the Deluge

Signed and dated 1840

RCIN 407176

In this Old Testament scene, Noah opens a prophetic scroll which reveals that the combined appearance of the sun, moon and a comet signals the coming of the catastrophic flood. The circling ravens add to the sense of foreboding, while the sublime scale of nature is accentuated by the oblivious dancing figures in the middle distance.

Purchased by Prince Albert in 1841
