Sappho and Cupid

c.1851

RCIN 41779

The greatest poetess of antiquity is depicted in a frenzy of grief at her rejection by a handsome seafarer, Phaon. This is one of a very small number of pagan subjects by Triqueti, a devout Protestant who had worked for the French royal family and successfully sought the patronage of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert following the Revolution of 1848.

Purchased by Queen Victoria and presented to Prince Albert at Christmas 1852
