FRANZ XAVER WINTERHALTER (1805-73)

Queen Victoria with Prince Arthur

Signed and dated 1850

RCIN 405963

Queen Victoria was particularly fond of her third son Arthur, writing of him, ‘The Child is dear, dearer than any of the others put together’. The setting is the terrace at Osborne, with a giant agave silhouetted against the view of the Solent, its spiky leaves contrasting with the soft textures of the Queen’s dress.
