Queen Victoria and Prince Albert’s third son, Arthur, born in 1850, was the godson of the Duke of Wellington. In this statue the three-year-old prince holds an ancient warrior’s sword, as heir to the military prowess and courage of the Great Duke, who had died in the previous year.
