JAMES ROBERTS (C. 1800-67)

Osborne House: Prince Albert's Dressing Room

dated Mar 1851

RCIN 926224

Between 1845 and 1847 Ludwig Gruner acquired twenty-seven early Italian pictures for Prince Albert. Four of the pictures shown in this watercolour are on display here (see right). The Duccio triptych (no. 96), was probably hanging on the window wall, perhaps above the writing desk on the left. Visible through the door to the right, in the Prince’s bathroom, is a fresco fragment of Hercules and Omphale by Joseph Gegenbauer, purchased in 1844.

Commissioned by Queen Victoria
