WILLIAM WYLD (1806-89)

Manchester from Kersal Moor

dated 1852

RCIN 920223

After a royal visit in October 1851, William Wyld was commissioned to record the skyline of Manchester, a subject he had already tackled in 1835. The setting of numerous factory chimneys within an idyllic pastoral landscape romanticised the fast industrial expansion of one of the most prosperous cities of the time.
