James Giles was asked to paint this view on the highest mountain on the Balmoral estate after a royal expedition to the area in September 1849. The commission put Giles, who did not enjoy working for his royal patrons, to some trouble and he endured severe weather and two separate climbs to the site to meet the Queen’s exacting requirements.
