EDWARD HENRY CORBOULD (1815-1905)

Dinah Morris preaching on the common

dated 1861

RCIN 451114

This watercolour and its pair (77) illustrate George Eliot’s popular novel Adam Bede, a favourite with both the Queen and Prince Albert. In this scene from the second chapter, Corbould has faithfully realised the author’s detailed description of the young Methodist preacher and her audience, the villagers of Hayslope.

Commissioned by Queen Victoria in 1860
