DAVID ROBERTS (1796-1864)

A View in Cairo

Signed and dated 1840

RCIN 403602

David Roberts first worked as a scenery painter in Drury Lane, and theatrical lighting and dramatic viewpoints are typical of his work. Towering buildings on either side in the foreground act like stage wings and increase the sense of depth by pushing the viewer’s eye towards the medieval gate of Zuweyleh in the distance.

Purchased by Queen Victoria in 1840

No. 51
