Ovid’s Metamorphoses describes the assault of the giants on the heavens in an attempt to overthrow Jupiter, king of the gods. Shown riding upon his eagle, Jupiter repels the invading giants by launching thunderbolts at them, which causes the mountains to collapse and crush the colossal figures. Royal Collection by c.1810
