These cabinets feature a central gilt-bronze mount depicting stories from Ovid’s Metamorphoses. One shows the moment of Daphne’s transformation into a laurel tree whilst pursued by the god Apollo. The other depicts Apollo about to flay Marsyas (who is bound to a tree) after losing to Apollo in a music contest.
