Ariadne (here misspelt ‘Ariana’), daughter of Minos, king of Crete, helped Theseus escape from the labyrinth after killing the Minotaur, and then eloped with him to Naxos, where he abandoned her. Bacchus, God of Wine, consoles her, and later makes her crown (right foreground) a constellation of seven stars.
