Dutch marriage fan

c. 1770

RCIN 25366

The love of Venus and Mars symbolises the triumph of love over war. In this pastoral scene, Mars has been disarmed by Venus’s attendants, the amorini. This romantic subject made this fan a suitable gift for the future Queen Mary on the occasion of her marriage in 1893.

Presented to Princess Victoria Mary of Teck (later Queen Mary), 1893
