NICOLAS POUSSIN (1594-1665)

Acis transformed into a river-god

RCIN 911939

Following his death at the hands of the Cyclops, Polyphemus, Acis was transformed into a river. This part of the story is rarely depicted in art, but Poussin has been particularly inventive by providing a large group of witnesses, who react appropriately to this remarkable event.

Acquired by Frederick, Prince of Wales, by 1750
