PHILIPPE BERTRAND (1663-1724)

Psyche and Mercury

c. 1700

RCIN 21641

Psyche, assisted by Mercury, is shown travelling on a seat of clouds to Mount Olympus where, after many adventures, she is reunited with her lover, Cupid. In her hand is the small vase in which she kept a portion of the beauty of Proserpina, the goddess of the underworld. Bertrand exhibited a bronze sculpture of this subject at the Paris Salon of 1704.
