NICHOLAS HILLIARD (1547-1619)

Mary, Queen of Scots (1542-1587)

c.1578-9

RCIN 420641

This important miniature of Mary, Queen of Scots is by the leading exponent of the new art of miniature painting at the court of Elizabeth I, Nicholas Hilliard. It seems likely that the sittings for the present miniature were made probably c.1576, whilst Mary was being held in captivity by the Earl of Shrewsbury.
