The subject of the Rape of Europa is also depicted in the painting by Claude shown nearby. On this clock Europa is seated above the clock cylinder, separating her from her ravisher, Jupiter, disguised as a bull. The original French mechanism in the clock was replaced by Benjamin Lewis Vulliamy in 1817.
