LORENZO LOTTO (VENICE C. 1480-LORETO 1556)

Andrea Odoni

Signed and dated 1527

RCIN 405776

This dynamic portrait by the Renaissance artist Lorenzo Lotto depicts Andrea Odoni, a wealthy Venetian merchant who formed a renowned collection of paintings, sculpture, antique vases, coins, gems and natural history objects. He is shown holding a statuette of Diana of the Ephesians, a symbol of nature, but the crucifix on his breast suggests that, for him, Christianity takes precedence.
