Albert Edward (1841-1910), Prince of Wales, was the eldest son and second child of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. He succeeded as Edward VII in 1901. This miniature was completed, according to the inscription on the reverse of the frame, in April 1846 as the second in the sequence of miniatures of the children of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert painted when each child was five years old.
