HANS SCHÄUFELEIN (1482/3-C. 1540)

St Paul

1523

RCIN 912179

Hans Schäufelein, whose place of birth is not known, was a talented member of Dürer’s workshop, and also worked with Hans Holbein the Elder. By 1515 he had started his own business in Nordlingen. This drawing, showing the elderly St Paul leaning wearily on his sword, is a good example of Schäufelein’s inventiveness and energetic draughtsmanship.
