NICOLÒ DELL'ABATE (MODENA C. 1509/12-FONTAINEBLEAU 1571)

St Augustine and St Genevieve

c.1560

RCIN 990146

Nicolò dell’Abate worked as Primaticcio’s assistant at Fontainebleau and after Primaticcio’s death he continued to work for the French royal family. This design bears the FM monogram of Mary, Queen of Scots and Francis II. The prominent hearts suggest it was made in connection with the monument planned for Francis’s heart after his unexpected death in 1560.
