ALBRECHT DÜRER (1471-1528)

St Anthony

1519

RCIN 800068

For this print, Dürer reused the landscape from his Pupila Augusta, the towering city echoing the reading saint’s stooping pose. Monks of the Order of St Anthony lived on charitable donations, which they solicited by ringing bells. The bell, seen hanging from the cross, became one of Anthony’s symbols.
