BENVENUTO CELLINI (1500-70)

Satyr

c. 1545

RCIN 94784

In 1542 Cellini was commissioned by Francis I to create sculptures for the Porte Dorée at Fontainebleau. A relief above the door was to be supported by two menacing satyrs, each three metres high. These were never made at full size, and their appearance is known only from this statuette and its counterpart (J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles).
