ATTRIBUTED TO HANS BROSAMER (C. 1506-1554)

Portrait of a Woman

c. 1522-27

RCIN 402866

The wife wears a linen coif worn by married German women. Her short cape is made either of cut silk velvet or a brocatelle with an edging of blue silk velvet. The couple’s clothes suggest affluence but not luxurious wealth. It is rare for paintings in this technique to survive, since the support is delicate and the paint layers are fragile.
