Alone, the Virgin mourns her son before he is buried. The crown of thorns alludes to the Crucifixion, the skull of Adam to the next stage in the story when Christ entered hell and redeemed Adam and all mankind. The way in which the dead Christ lies at an angle across the Virgin was derived from Rogier van der Weyden.
