Louis XII, King of France (1462-1515)

c.1510-14

RCIN 403431

The French King Louis XII married Henry VIII’s sister, Mary Tudor, in 1514. Perréal may have brought this famous portrait to Henry’s court when he came to England as part of the marriage negotiations. The hat badge shows the patron saint of the French monarchy, St Denis, with two companions. The collar and badge is that of the Order of   St Michel founded in 1469.
