JOOS VAN CLEVE (1485/90-1540/1)

Katlijne van Mispelteeren, The Artist's Wife

1530-5

RCIN 405779

Katlijne van Mispelteeren is elegantly but plainly dressed. Unlike her husband, her gaze is meditative and her hands rest quietly. Shadows of both the sitters and the frames appear on the plain green backgrounds to realistic effect. The paint layers on both portraits are worn and transparent, revealing the artist’s underdrawing, which is particularly evident in the wife’s headdress.
