STUDIO OF FRANÇOIS CLOUET (C. 1520-1572)

Henry II, King of France

1559

RCIN 403430

Henry II succeeded Francis I as King of France in 1547. This is one of several versions produced by Clouet’s studio the year Henry died in a jousting accident. It was based on the preparatory drawing for a full-length portrait of c.1547 but shows the King beginning to go grey. The King wears the insignia of the Order of St Michel.
